Recommending Shanghai restaurant in Singapore

I was not born in Shanghai, but generally people from the Jiang Nan area (Shanghai, Zhejiang, Southern Jiangsu) have similar taste for food. In fact we share a lot of traits in common: our food is similar, we speak the same type of dialect ("Wu", although it can be further classified into many sub-genres), we are all stereotyped as “cool and calculating” etc.

I came to Singapore several years ago and if I have to name one thing that I miss about hometown, it will be FOOD (especially Sheng Jian Bao - my favorite Shanghai / Jiang Nan cuisine). Fortunately, Singapore has a good variety of authentic Chinese restarutants and some of them are indeed Shanghainese. (Although from my observation, Shanghai food is not very popular among Singaporeans, compared to other Chinese food like Sichuan and Cantonese). As a local Jiangnanese I'd like to recommend some of them so that more people interested in Shanghai food can find their ideal Shanghai restaurant for dining.

1. Imperial Treasure Fine Shanghai Cuisine (御园) @ Takashimaya / Ngee Ann City

A Fine Shanghai Cuisine Concept.
Imperial Treasure Fine Shanghai Cuisine is located in the heart of Orchard district. Indulge in the finest ingredients coupled with impeccable service that will put together an extravagant dining experience for all.

One of my favorite hometown dishes, Gui Hua Tang Ou (Sweer Lotus Root with osmanthus). Actually it's a Hangzhou dish but not a Shanghai one.

This place is GOLD. I discovered it during working at the Somerset area and my encounter with it was totally not planned. I remember I was trying to look for a Japanese restaurant one day in Takashimaya and accidentally found this nice place. My dining-mate that day was also from Jiang Nan (Suzhou to be exact, close to Shanghai) and we have been craving for hometown food for long so we decided on the spot to have dinner there. Some self-acclaimed Shanghainese restaurants in Singapore have disappointed me A LOT in the past so honestly I did not expect too much from it, but it turns out to be SUPER GOOD. They have really good Xiao Long Bao (小笼包), Cai Pao Fan (菜泡饭), Chao Nian Gao (炒年糕, stir-fried rice cake) and some other authentic Shanghai dishes. What makes me love them so much is their signature dish Yan Du Xian (腌笃鲜, fresh & salted pork with bamboo shoot soup
) - one of the all-time favorites of Shanghai / Suzhou / Hangzhou dwellers, but not so famous among people not from Jiang Nan. Their Yan Du Xian, although ingredients-wise can be further improved (but this is acceptable as it's really hard to get authentic ingredients in Singapore), taste-wise it is just PERFECT.
Highly recommend.

Their Yan Du Xian. 好吃! I took the pic.

2. Cui Ying Ge / Melite (翠英阁) @ NUS

[Update: it's permanently closed T.T]

There's actually a really nice Shanghai restaurant hidden on the Kent Ridge Campus of National University of Singapore! Cui Ying Ge is located next to University Health Center and I used to visit it frequently when I lived at RVR / UTown due to close proximity (plus the food is really nice and not expensive compared to other restaurants off-campus). They include some good Nanjing dish as well (like Song Shu Gui Yu). Their Hong Shao Rou (红烧肉, Stewed Pork in Brown Sauce) is really authentic and a must-try.

Unfortunately I don't have any photo of their dishes in my phone, so I just use some pictures from Google.

3. Pu Dong Kitchen (浦东小馆) @ Bukit Timah Road

A friend recommended this place to me, saying that it has really good Sheng Jian Bao. Unfortunately when I went there they have sold out of Sheng Jian Bao for that day. The other dishes are okay, I would not say it's very good (compared to 御园) but it's definitely worth a try for those interested in Shanghai food. Nearest MRT should be Newton if I'm not wrong. The restaurant itself is hidden at the basement of a small and old mall so it might be a bit hard to locate.

There are many other good Shanghai restaurant in Singapore and stay tuned - I will recommend more as soon as I try them out and confirm they are good. I'm quite confident in my taste for Shanghai food - I'm a real Jiang Nan person after all, haha! My judgement towards Jiang Nan / Shanghai food rarely goes wrong.
