Crystal Jade Jiang Nan at VivoCity

I have previously written two articles about Shanghai Restaurant Singapore, as well as Takashimaya Restaurants. As I said, there are quite a lot of Jiang Nan restaurants in Singapore that serves Shanghai dishes, not only in Takashimaya. One of them is Crystal Jade Jiang Nan. I've actually tried it out several times. Good thing about it- location; often there is no queue. Maybe a drawback - there is no very "signature" dish that can impress me, though on average the dishes are good. Though it's a Jiang Nan restaurant, the dishes are not very Shanghai-nese. Quite a lot of them are actually quite Szechuan. Nevertheless, they have above-average Nian Gao (rice cakes) and Xiao Long Bao. Pictures to come in later. Tried their Peking duck today (haha Peking duck in a Jiangnan restaurant). Not bad, but as previous mentioned, but very impressive indeed.

I used to visit it a lot when I worked in Singtel (Somerset) as it really got some nice restaurants that are definitely worth a try (let alone the food hall at Basement 2). In fact we share a lot of traits in common: our food is similar, we speak the same type of dialect ("Wu", although it can be further classified into many sub-genres), we are all stereotyped as “cool and calculating” etc. Shanghai! Picture taken from chinahighlights.com I came to Singapore several years ago and if I have to name one thing that I miss about hometown, it will be FOOD (especially Sheng Jian Bao - my favorite Shanghai / Jiang Nan cuisine). Fortunately, Singapore has a good variety of authentic Chinese restarutants and some of them are indeed Shanghainese. (Although from my observation, Shanghai food is not very popular among Singaporeans, compared to other Chinese food like Sichuan and Cantonese). As a local Jiangnanese I'd lik
